MUDRAS AND BANDHAS (Gestures and Neuro-muscular locks)

In Yogic texts, Mudra is considered as a Yoganga, an independent branch of Yoga, and Bandhas are classified as part of Mudras. The nature of Mudras and Bandhas are more physiological as well as psychological as they impart good health, strength, vigor, and vitality to the practitioner.

Mudras

Mudra is a Sanskrit word which is translated as ‘gesture’ or ‘attitude’. Mudras can be described as psychic, emotional, devotional and aesthetic gestures or attitudes. Mudras are a combination of subtle physical movements which alter mood, attitude, perception and deepen awareness and concentration. A Mudra may involve the whole body in a combination of Asana, Pranayama, Bandha and visualization techniques or it may be a simple hand position.

Bandhas

The Sanskrit word Bandha means to hold, or lock. The technique is to use neuromuscular contractions to seal off certain energy flows and to redirect specific Pranic (life force) channels in the subtle body. When the Bandha is released, it causes the energy to flood more strongly throughout the body with increased pressure that stimulates other organs. Bandhas are extensively incorporated into Mudras as well as Pranayama techniques.
