Trataka – Concentrated Gazing (Drishtiyoga / The Yoga of Sight/ Meditation on Third Eye)


The flow of thoughts in our brain is an on-going process. It has a habitual tendency for distraction. This leaves us feeling so much fragmented that we find ourselves scattered in all directions. We are unable to grasp and focus in the present moment. It is a must for every man and woman to discover a sure means to control and discipline the mind.
Numerous methods have been recommended in ancient texts. The ancient yogis always came up with simple but powerful ways i.e. Drishtiyoga or the Yoga of Sight (TRATAKA).
Trataka (in Sanskrit to look, or to gaze) continuously at a particular point or object without winking. Though this is one of the six purificatory exercises, it is mainly intended for developing concentration, mental focusing, steadies the wandering mind, getting rid of unwanted thoughts, and curbing the mind’s oscillating tendencies.
Benefits:
  • Exercises the muscles of the eye and strengthened; preserves and maintains good eyesight; it cleanses the eyes thus making them clean, bright and attractive.
  • In this technique the Central nervous system starts working and people working for long hours in front of Computer relaxes the eyes and brain.
  • The purpose of this practice is to coordinate the impulses of the sensory and motor nerves, which assist in producing a state of calmness and tranquility .So it, is a very effective way of withdrawing from external stress, tension, distractions and allowing the brain to enter a relaxed and highly beneficial alpha state.

  • If these practices are done before sleeping, then the melatonin levels are seen to rise.
  • It balances the nervous system, relieving anxiety and depression. Helps in getting rid of many mental, emotional, and physical ailments and diseases.
  • Develops the ability to maintain one-pointedness amongst the noise and distractions of daily life, leads to healthy and balanced living.
  • This technique is also meditative as it silences the mind, strengthens the will power and decisions making ability.
